KNOWLTON PLAYERS - OUR ROOTS

In 1984, British born actress Emma Stevens formed the “Brome Lake Amateurs”, filling a cultural void in the Eastern Townships town of Knowlton, Quebec.  The three one-act plays which were produced that season met with great success and the enthusiastic group continued performing for the next three years in the Oddfellows’ Hall, the Lakeview Hotel, Knowlton Academy, Glen Mountain, and in tents at the Lions’ Club Park.  A theatre was built in 1988 which became the home of Theatre Lac Brome, a professional theatre company, with Emma Stevens as its original artistic director.  The amateur group continued to present plays during the winter season under the direction of Emma, and Danny McAuley.  In 1990 a group was formed  under the name of KNOWLTON PLAYERS and elected an executive committee to administer its activities.  The original Knowlton Players Executive is listed below. KNOWLTON PLAYERS is dedicated to presenting family-oriented productions, and we are sustained by the commitment of our members and the support of our audiences.

Since its inception, it has provided an opportunity for the residents of Brome Missisquoi and beyond, to express themselves in a theatrical venue. Often including professionals in directing, choreography, musical and acting roles, a wider spectrum of talent has been made available to the local residents, either in the form of involvement with the productions or through workshops, to assist them in enlarging their sphere of exposure and bringing a higher level of theatrical experience to the production patrons. The funds raised by these presentations are given back to the community, and to date have exceeded $100,000. The beneficiaries of these funds have included the local hospital, the library, the schools, student scholarships and bursaries and a host of other worthy causes.
